DUNWOODY, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A Dunwoody man with cerebral palsy has spent three decades donating soda and soup tabs to Ronald McDonald House Atlanta, raising thousands of dollars for children along the way.

Friday was a typical pickup-and-delivery day for Tom Copper and his son, Todd Copper. But their bins aren’t filled with what most people expect.

“We’re going to pick up some pop tops,” Tom Copper said.

For those wondering, pop tops are the snappy tabs at the top of soda and soup cans, sometimes called “tabs.”

“We do this quite often,” Tom said.

But this work is not instigated by Tom but by Todd.

“This is Todd’s mission to collect pop tops for Ronald McDonald [House Atlanta],” Tom said.

Call him the “Pop Top King.” Todd lives with cerebral palsy and first started collecting pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House in 1996.

30 years later, he’s still going, to the tune of hundreds of pounds of pop tops per year.

He believes that his health problems pale in comparison to what families at the Ronald McDonald House are dealing with.

“They cannot do that on their own,” Todd said.

The Ronald McDonald House in Atlanta houses families in need while their children seek medical treatment.

Several stops were made Friday morning. People like Geraldine, who collects pop tops through her church, add to the pile.

“No matter how many you bring, it takes part in caring for those children,” Geraldine said.

There are more stops, but eventually, the end goal is reached.

“It shows that regardless of life situation or financial standing, or anything like that, there is always a way that you could give back,” said Sarah Parrish, Senior Director of Marketing and External Relations for Ronald McDonald House Atlanta.

The tabs raise upwards of $3,000 each year for the house, which funds operating costs.

Once the tabs are in the bin, it’s time to head home and start getting ready for the next donation.

“It’s almost an addiction,” Tom said.
