As communities across the nation observe Community Health Improvement Week, a powerful example of local generosity unfolded in Atlanta. The Greater Atlanta McDonald’s Owner/Operators Association (GAMOA) presented a $412,000 Giving Day donation to Ronald McDonald House Atlanta, recognizing the collective efforts of customers, restaurant crews, managers and owner/operators who have rallied around families facing pediatric medical challenges.
But organizers emphasized that the celebration was never about the size of the check.
Instead, it was about the thousands of individual acts of kindness that made it possible.
The June 10 event brought together McDonald’s owner/operators, Ronald McDonald House Atlanta leaders, community partners and supporters to celebrate a fundraising initiative that continues to transform the lives of families navigating medical crises.
Funds were generated through McDonald’s annual Giving Day campaign and Round Up donations collected at participating restaurants throughout Greater Atlanta. Through Ronald McDonald House fundraising efforts, McDonald’s owner/operators and customers have helped raise more than $3.4 million in the past year alone, contributing to GAMOA’s ongoing commitment to Ronald McDonald House Atlanta’s $10 million capital campaign.
For Steve Akinboro, Atlanta McDonald’s owner/operator and business unit president, the day represented something much larger than fundraising totals.
“Today is about celebrating what can happen when a community comes together to support local families,” Akinboro said. “We don’t only do business in our communities—we believe in giving back to every community where we do business.”
Akinboro reflected on McDonald’s long-standing culture of community engagement, noting that Giving Day has become one of the organization’s most meaningful annual traditions.
“A huge portion of what comes in on Giving Day, as McDonald’s owner/operators, we don’t keep for ourselves and our families,” he said. “We give it back to the communities and the people who support us and support this House.”
The centerpiece of the celebration was the presentation of a Giving Day donation totaling $412,000.08, representing 20 percent of sales generated during the annual fundraising event.
Yet speakers repeatedly returned to the idea that the real impact lies in the people behind the numbers.
“While we are presenting a check today, the real story is the thousands of customers who choose to support Ronald McDonald House Atlanta through Giving Day and Round Up,” Akinboro said.
The donation pushes GAMOA’s total contribution to more than $7.6 million toward its overall $10 million pledge to Ronald McDonald House Atlanta, bringing the organization closer to fulfilling a commitment that will benefit families for years to come.
For second-generation McDonald’s owner/operator Desiree Marie Rodriguez, the event served as a reminder that extraordinary outcomes often begin with the smallest gestures.
“When people see a check like this, they see a number,” Rodriguez said. “What I see are thousands of moments of generosity that made it possible.”
She described the chain of support that starts with a customer rounding up their change and extends through crew members, managers and owner/operators working together toward a common purpose.
“I see a customer who rounded up their change. I see a crew member who asked the question. I see a manager inspiring their teams daily. I see owner/operators giving a percentage of their sales.”
For Rodriguez, supporting Ronald McDonald House Atlanta goes far beyond fundraising.
“It’s about helping families stay together during some of the most difficult times of their lives,” she said. “It’s about giving parents a place to rest, a warm meal and one less thing to worry about while their child receives care.”
